What is CEREC?
CEREC refers to same-day crowns that can be made right here in our office. Rather than wait to come in for a second appointment so that the permanent crown can be placed, we make the permanent one while you wait. CEREC crowns are just as durable and natural-looking as other types, but they can be made in a short period of time. You might benefit from a CEREC crown if you don’t necessarily have the time or ability to come in for multiple appointments.
Why might CEREC be needed?
Crowns are designed to cover a damaged or otherwise compromised tooth. If a tooth has broken, fractured or cracked, we might recommend that a CEREC crown be placed. Likewise, if you’ve had a root canal done, we’ll recommend that you have a crown placed over the tooth since it’s more vulnerable to cracking and breaking. CEREC is needed for patients who don’t have the time or ability to come in to have the permanent crown placed.
Who is a candidate for CEREC?
To determine if you might need a CEREC crown, we will perform an examination. We recommend that if you need a crown, you have one placed to prevent further damage to the tooth. If you have an older crown that needs to be replaced, we can remove it and replace it with a CEREC crown. Most of our patients love CEREC technology and the ability to have all of the work done in just one appointment.
What happens during the CEREC procedure?
The first step is to numb the area of the mouth needing the crown. We then file down and shape the tooth to make room for the new crown. Digital impressions are taken and used in the CEREC crown machine. The machine makes the permanent crown for you while you wait in the office. We then place the permanent crown, preventing the need for a second appointment. You will find that your new CEREC crown lasts for years before it’ll need to be replaced. You can brush and floss around your crown as you would any natural teeth.
