Dental Bridges
What are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge is a restoration that can replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge sits on top of healthy surrounding teeth while the middle portion of the bridge replaces the missing tooth, simply sitting on top of the gum line. Bridges offer cosmetic as well as restorative benefits to patients. Most bridges can last for years or even decades before needing to be replaced.
Why would a Dental Bridge be needed?
If you’re missing a tooth completely, you might feel embarrassed or uncomfortable about your smile. In some cases and depending on where the tooth is missing, it can even be difficult to eat and chew properly. Bridges are needed to replace the missing tooth without the need for surgery. Bridges are made to look like your natural teeth, so they blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile.
Who is a candidate for a Dental Bridge?
Most patients who are missing a tooth can and should consider fixed bridge work. In fact, patients who aren’t good candidates for surgery or who don’t want dental implants can benefit from having a bridge placed. The bridge needs to have at least two healthy teeth to attach to, so we’ll discuss options if you are missing multiple teeth and want to replace them all. If you have an older bridge, we can remove and replace it easily in our office.
What happens during the procedure for a Dental Bridge?
The bridge procedure begins with local anesthetic to numb the area of the mouth. We then shape and file down the two surrounding teeth. This is done to make room for the new dental bridge. Impressions are taken and used to make the actual bridge for you. You will come in for a second appointment so that the bridge can be placed. You can brush and floss around the bridge normally. The new bridge should last you for many years and provide you with a full, beautiful smile.
